ICANN Confirms April 2026 Launch of New gTLD Round, Hosts Webinar on Draft Applicant Guidebook
Time:
2025-06-17 21:04:56
In its May 20, 2025 report "Understanding the gTLD Opportunity for Brands", ICANN highlighted a significant gap in awareness among brand owners. Many have yet to leverage the benefits of owning a .brand domain due to perceived costs, complexity, and lack of information. A global survey commissioned by ICANN revealed that 54% of marketing leaders prioritize brand visibility and awareness, followed by customer retention (45%) and market expansion (40%). Branded TLDs can address these goals by offering enhanced control, security, and trust, particularly as AI and data privacy dominate digital trends over the next five years.

To support applicants ahead of the 2026 launch, ICANN will host a critical webinar on June 3, 2025, titled "High-level Guide to the Draft Applicant Guidebook (AGB)". The webinar will be held twice to accommodate global audiences:

  • 06:00–07:30 CEST
  • 18:30–20:00 CEST

Key topics will include an overview of the gTLD application journey, community priority evaluation, contention set resolution, application fees, and public comment processes. This session coincides with the final public comment period for the full AGB draft, running from May 30 to July 23, 2025.

ICANN has also launched the New gTLD Use Cases website, showcasing successful implementations like .berlin, .amsterdam, .edeka, and .microsoft. For example, Microsoft uses its .brand TLD to enhance user trust, simplify naming strategies, and strengthen brand consistency. EDEKA, a leading retailer, employs .edeka domains across digital initiatives and communication channels.

"Our message to brands is clear: now is the time to start planning for 2026, and we are committed to providing support," stated ICANN in the report. The organization urges brand owners to evaluate their domain strategies, align internal stakeholders, and engage with ongoing policy processes. The June 3 webinar serves as an ideal starting point for any organization aiming to secure its digital identity in the next era of internet governance.
